Information for former Met officers

If you were a member of the police pension scheme between 31 March 2012 and 1 April 2015; left after 1 April 2015 and are not receiving your pension you will be offered a choice of pension benefits.

This is as a result of a successful legal challenge on the grounds of age discrimination to how the reform to public sector pensions, including the 2015 police pension scheme, was implemented. You will offered the choice of pension benefits to undo that discrimination, for any service between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022. This is called the remedy period.

If you are a serving Met officer who has opted out of the police pension there is information for you on the Met intranet.

The choice:

You can choose:

  • Option A – 1987 or 2006 police pension scheme – you can only choose the scheme you were a member of not between the two, or
  • Option B – 2015 police pension scheme

Remediable Service Statement (RSS):

You will be sent a Remediable Service (RSS), this will set out the different pension benefits for option A (1987 or 2006) and option B (2015) so you can see how they compare.

The RSS will cover any pensionable service during the remedy period – 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022. The three police pension schemes – 1987; 2006 and 2015 – have different contributions rates, that’s the amount you paid in each month. Your RSS will show you the different contributions for both option A and option B.

If you choose the scheme that costs more than you have paid you will need to pay the difference or if you choose the scheme that costs less than you have already paid you will be owed money. This is called a contributions adjustment.

The government has set interest rates on money owed to the pension or an individual. This is applied to contributions.

You can make your contributions adjustment within three months of receiving your RSS in 2025, or when you draw your police pension. If you choose to do this on taking your pension you can pay direct from it. More information on how you can do this will be sent with your RSS.
