More information for Retired Officers

If you retired from the Met between 2 April 2015 and 30 September 2023 and you were in the police pension scheme, or another public sector pension, between 31 March 2012 and 1 April 2015 you will be offered a choice of pension benefits.

There was a successful legal challenge on the grounds of age discrimination to how the reform of public sector pensions were implemented. You will be offered a choice of pension benefits to undo that discrimination. Your choice covers any service between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022. This is called the remedy period.

Your choice will depend on if, or when, you moved from either the 1987 or 2006 to the 2015 scheme.

The choice:

You can choose:

  • Option A - 1987 or 2006 scheme benefits
  • Option B - 2015 scheme benefits

Remediable Service Statement (RSS):

Between mid-January and late March 2025 you will be sent information to help you make your choice. The information is called a Remediable Service Statement (RSS).

It will set out the pension benefits for option A (1987 or 2006 scheme) and option B 2015 scheme so you can see how they compare.

The statement will cover your pensionable service during the remedy period - 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022. This will be less than seven years if you retired before 31 March 2022.

If your service was in the 1987 scheme you cannot choose to move to 2006; if your service was in 2006 you cannot choose to move to the 1987 scheme.

Once you have received your RSS, you will have 12 months to confirm your choice. There will be a letter with your RSS explaining how to make your choice and other helpful information.

Independent financial or specialist advice

Pensions are complicated. If your pension changes as a result of the McCloud Remedy, you may be able to claim compensation. For example, you may be able to reclaim any money spent on financial advice to help you understand the pension choice available to you.

Only claims that are as a direct result of the remedy made for advice claimed after you have received your remedy figures in the Remediable Service Statement (RSS) will be eligible. You can complete and submit your compensation here.

Contingent decisions, or reversing a decision

A contingent decision is a decision that would have been different had reformed pensions not been introduced as they were. The decision must directly relate to police pension scheme membership from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022.

For example, if you chose to opt out of the 2015 scheme when it was introduced, there is now an opportunity to ask to opt back in. You can apply to make a contingent decision here.
